The capital and most populated city of the U.S. state of Iowa, Des Moines. When visiting Des Moines, a good starting point should be the State Capitol, which is one of the nation's most beautiful public buildings and one of the largest of its kind. The 275-foot main dome is covered with genuine 23-karat gold leaf.
The Des Moines Botanical Center is also of significant beauty. The museum preserves a permanent collection of more than 1,000 different species of tropical and subtropical plants and cultivars, growing in their natural cycle. Nearby is Adventureland Park, a family resort packed full with over 100 rides, shows, and attractions including some of the country's most exciting roller coasters and thrill rides that can challenge the most avid amusement park enthusiasts.
The Iowa State Fair is held annually in Des Moines. Placing a great deal of emphasis on the agricultural industry in Iowa, the fair focuses on livestock shows and sales including competitions for the biggest animals. There are contests including the Big Boar, the Big Ram, the Super Bull, and the Largest Rabbit. One of the most well known features of the fair is the Butter Cow. Each year a cow figure is sculpted from butter.
